THE WAY OF ST JAMES, STAYING IN RURAL ACCOMMODATION
Cebreiro to Santiago
This option takes you along part of the Way, starting in the mountains of Galicia at the legendary hamlet of O Cebreiro. During your journey, you’ll stay in comfortable rural accommodation very close to the Way: well-maintained country houses, rectories or farmhouses. There will be a full, energy-packed home-made breakfast every morning. And then off you go – no hurry, no luggage.
Accommodation in O Cebreiro.
Stage O Cebreiro-Triacastela 21 km/4-5h.
Your walk begins in O Cebreiro, a special place on the border between Galicia and the Castilla y León region. You’ll leave this landscape, with its pallozas (traditional Galician buildings) and links to the Holy Grail, and ascend – over two high passes – before descending again on a route that takes you through small mountain hamlets. At the end of the day’s journey, you’ll reach your rural accommodation, which is close to Triacastela.
Stage Triacastela-Sarria 18 km / 3-4 h.
From Triacastela you’ll follow the course of the river along the Royal Way, through small hamlets with large stone houses. Finally, you’ll see the Sarria Valley, and, after a steady descent, you’ll reach your accommodation, which is located right beside the Way.
Stage Sarria-Portomarín 21 km / 4-5 h.
You’ll leave Sarria by the Rúa Maior (High Street) and find yourself on one of the most beautiful stages of the Way, with small villages scattered along it that are joined by minor roads and corredoiras (tracks). Finally, you’ll reach the new Portomarín, on the bank of River Miño (the old Portomarín lies under the waters of the nearby reservoir).
Stage Portomarín-Lestedo 19 km / 4-5 h.
You’ll set off from Portomarín, leaving the River Miño behind you, and ascend gently up the Sierra de Ligonde, then walk through the hamlets of Ventas de Narón, Ligonde and Eirexe, ending up at Lestedo.
Stage Lestedo-Castañeda 27 km / 5-6 h.
A short distance from Lestedo, you’ll reach the town of Palas. Beyond this, oak trees dominate the landscape on your route to Coto. You’ll cross the River Furelos just outside Melide, and beyond Melide start the last section of the route, which you’ll then leave temporarily and walk along rural roads to Castañeda.
Stage Castañeda-Rúa 24 km / 5-6 h.
You’ll return to the Way of St James, and walk on to Ribadiso, a beautiful spot which is ideal for your first break. Next, you’ll arrive at the town of Arzúa, famous for its cheeses. You’ll notice on the way from there to Rúa that the countryside is changing, and you’ll reach the town itself after a sharp descent.
From Rúa, you’ll walk to Amenal, where there’s a sharp climb, followed by a descent through San Paio and Lavacolla. From here, you’ll climb up the Monte do Gozo, from where you’ll be able to see the Cathedral’s towers. At this point, you’re a short distance from the pleasant hustle and bustle of the streets of Compostela. This is the end of your walk, and our services finish here
